How Should A Skateboard Helmet Fit?
When it comes to extreme sports, we cannot emphasise this enough – Safety first. Whether you’re an avid skateboarder or just starting out, safety is paramount as injuries can happen. Ensuring you always have the right kind of helmet and protectors can be the difference between a broken wrist and a small graze! Don’t forget, even the pros wear helmets!
With a Skateboard Helmet, it’s important to understand that it needs to fit correctly, otherwise you’re setting yourself up for disaster. Remember: an ill-fitted helmet can be just as bad as not wearing a helmet at all.
Don’t worry, SkateHut has you covered with a range of top brands like CORE and Rampage. We have a large range of different helmets and protective gear such as Knee Pads and Wrist Guards to help keep you safe. So whether you’re a seasoned pro, or an enthusiastic beginner, check out how to measure your head for a skateboard helmet and how it should fit below!
So, How Should a Skateboard Helmet Fit?
The Skateboard Helmet should fit snugly, with no gaps between your head and the foam lining. There shouldn’t be the ability to move the helmet freely, and at the same time it shouldn’t be so tight that it is physically uncomfortable.
If a helmet is too big, you run the risk of it slipping off or shifting, which negates the protective element in the first place, not to mention it looks silly wiggling around on top of your head!
If the helmet is too small, then you’re putting yourself into discomfort and could accidently give yourself headaches with the pressure – also not ideal.
A snug fit is key for a comfortable and protected ride on your Skateboard.
Key Features of a Skateboard Helmet
High Impact foam liners – lots of foam liners tend to be removable to help adjust the sizing so you can get the perfect fit.
Adjustable chin strap – The adjustable chin strap allows you to fit the helmet snugly to your head. Usually the chin strap allows for a Y shape underneath your ears with the buckle giving you the ability to keep the helmet securely on your head.
Air ventilation – To help keep your head cool and minimise any sweating, air ventilation holes can be found on helmets whilst still offering incredible protection.
How to Measure Head For a Skateboard Helmet
What you need:
- Tape measure
- String
OR
Tailor’s measuring tape
Method 1:
Remember, the front of the helmet will sit roughly an inch above your eyebrows. Take your string and wrap it around your head, just above your ears.
Now that you have the circumference of your head with string, measure the length of it against a tape measure (or ruler but a tape measure would be better in this situation).
Method 2:
The process for measuring your head is pretty simple. If you have a tailor’s measuring tape, you're halfway there already.
The front of the helmet will sit about an inch above your eyebrows. From there, wind your tape measure around your head just above your ears. Voila! You’ve measured your head.
Take your measurements in both inches and centimetres as helmets can vary in terms of measurement types.
