How to Choose Skateboard Wheels

When choosing your Skateboard Wheels, there are three key things you’ll need to consider. You’ll have to think about the size, durometer and shape of the wheels to ensure you get the best set for your exact requirements. We will go through each one below now.

The Size of the Wheels

 

Generally, the size of your Skateboard Wheels will range anywhere between 48mm to 70mm. Smaller wheels are usually better suited towards street skating, technical skating, etc., and usually measure in at around 50mm to 52mm. If, however, you prefer using Skateboard Ramps and cruising, you’ll want to opt for wider wheels which will give you a bit more traction and allows for an easier ride. Larger wheels generally measure at 58mm and above. For the best of both worlds, or maybe if you’re undecided on what you want, go for a set of wheels in the middle ground, between 54mm and 56mm.   

 

Durometer of Skateboard Wheels

 

Durometer simply means how soft or hard your Skateboard wheels are. Typically, softer Wheels will suit people who like cruising and using the ramps a little more due to the traction offered for a smoother ride. Harder wheels allow you to slide around and tends to cater towards street skaters. Soft wheels are also usually a bit bigger too and of course, the opposite is true for harder wheels. As you can see, the size of the wheels and the durometer are linked, the two aren’t mutually exclusive.

The Shape of Skateboard Wheels

 

The shape of your skateboard wheels can vary massively depending on brands and styles, however, the main three shapes are radial, conical and concave. 


Conical wheels are shaped in a way to help people lock into ledges and ramps, whereas radial and concave are better suited for contact and general ease of ride. Again, you will want to choose the shape depending on the style of Skateboarding you wish to undertake.
