Best Roller Skates - 2022
The resurgence in Roller Skates popularity peaked throughout Lockdown as everyone tried to find more fun and creative ways to kill time and keep fit. The community for the beloved mid-century pastime has only continued to grow since 2020. The two-by-two wheel layout offers more stability than that of an Inline Skate set up and offers much more user friendly speed control.
Quads are considered a more versatile Skate type in terms of the kind of Skating you’re able to do. Although generally designed as slower than Roller Blades, you are able to venture into rhythm and dance Skating with the utilisation and removal of the toe stop. There are various types of Skating and each has their own boot best suited. There is dance/jam Skating, park Skating, recreational Skating and speed Skating. In terms of boot types, there is a Figure Skate similar to the heeled ice figure Skate design which aids balance and weight distribution, a more aggressive speed Skate which is often heavily padded but tied low for maximum ankle movement. The final type of boot is a more recent mainstream contender but it is the park Skate. Taking to the Skatepark on Roller Skates has often been a DIY job, but with the rise in popularity of street and park Skating we’re beginning to see more and more complete park set-ups on the market.
Generally as a beginner we recommend a hard ankle boot for maximum ankle support and a raised heel which will aid balance. This is to help you get used to keeping your knees bent and leaning forward. Most Skates have 82A wheels which are versatile regarding indoor and outdoor use, but if your Skates get regular outdoor use we recommend using 78A wheels. The lower the wheel number, the softer the wheel is, which 78As are perfect for extra surface friction and any dips or bumps you may come across. We recommend higher durometer wheels around 90A+ for indoor or derby Skating as these can reach higher speeds due to the lack of friction of a harder wheel. Skate Protection
When Roller Skating it’s super important to stay protected - whatever the age or skill level. Helmets are always of paramount importance. We always advise a triple pad set to protect wrists, knees and elbows. Sizing of your Knee Pads and helmet is imperative to safety so we do have some sizing recommendations to help. With pads, we advise measuring 2-3 inches above and below the knee joint and use these measurements to select the correct size from the relevant pad sizing chart. For helmet sizing, we say the best way is to first measure the head circumference around 1 - 2 inches below the hairline at both the front and back of the head. This measurement can be used alongside the model and brand specific size guides to ensure the perfect fit for maximum protection. We have a selection of Skates bundles with our favourite protection items available at a combined discounted price - it’s never been easier to start your Skate journey.
